The Carney Pirates are the newest team to grace the schedule of the Clark Griffith League in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Hailing from some of the most competitive baseball region in the mid-Atlantic, the members of this team have recently completed successful high school careers and now begin their college and university adventure. The coaching and administrative staff have a lengthy legacy with youth baseball in Northern Virginia.
Jack Carney
Jack Carney, the Pirates benefactor, is a highly respected and successful former real estate developer involved with and responsible for some of the most significant western Fairfax development, including Fair Oaks Mall and the Fairfax County Government Center. He also excelled at financial securities investments and management and remains a participant in ongoing Northern Virginia development (like Wegman’s).
Mr. Carney is the Chairman of the Carney Foundation, an organization created to help support young athletes in their overall personal development toward a successful adult life. Known for his intense focus and perseverance, Mr. Carney lettered eleven times in three sports at Washington & Lee High School as a star in each sport. He was a halfback, point guard, and pitcher captaining several of the teams toward success. He received six scholarship offers in different sports and went on to play semi-pro baseball before his third knee operation sidelined him.
An avid Pittsburgh sports fan (thus our name), Mr. Carney admired the Rooney family for their leadership and integrity. We are very fortunate to have as a role model and sponsor, this fine gentleman and set our team goals similarly, as it relates to focus, effort, and sportsmanship.
