Our report for the July 20 contest with the Pirates confronting their CGL rivals, the Vienna Senators, comes in two flavors: First our “View from the Cheap Seats” followed by the “Official Game Recap”. Following those you’ll find the scrumptious statistics at the very end of our lengthy celebration. Keep readin’!
The View from the Cheap Seats

Carney Pirate reporter sequestered in a cave deep in Clifton.
In honor of the passing of legendary broadcaster Walter Cronkite, who early in his career re-created sports broadcasts from wire reports, and in celebration of a very impressive regular season performance of our Carney Pirates (26-9) against perennial powerhouse Vienna, we had a former Pirate write up the July 20 exciting Pirate victory. Sequestered in a cave deep in the Clifton hinterlands, the reporter used webcasts, twitters, word of mouth, hearsay, and his usual dose of baloney to record for prosperity this rare accomplishment. The last time the Senators lost a regular season series, Coach Salgado looked good in a Speedo.
Coach Emerson, whose early departure the last time these two league leaders met showed once again, that being right is overrated, became the first CGL coach to reach 26 wins this season as Pat Somers turned in a gem of an outing going seven very impressive innings, giving up only four hits, recording five k’s and not allowing an earned run. The previous time these teams met they also encountered rain which had the same effect on the Pirates that Dorothy’s bucket of water had on the wicked witch as the Pirates waited over 50 minutes only to have their brains bashed in 11-0. This time it would be different as the Pirates offense smacked the ball all over the field, including a backbreaking, game deciding five run sixth.
Radford U.’s head coach Joe Raccuia had to be pleased with the performance of his three Highlanders, Zach Costello, Alex Guerra, and Rob Lamas as they were on base all evening long, collecting five hits, three runs and two RBI’s among them. If Radford pitching comes through, the future appears very bright. Can anyone say Mike Mitchell, Brad Wimmer or how about a two-fer Tyler Costello? Call now, operators are standing by.

Snyder's Bulk Burger: Mom's Home Cooking Plan
Displaying the power brought on by his Mom’s Home Cooking Plan, Matt Snyder went 3 for 4 including an RBI double and a base on balls. Chad Morgan also had an excellent evening at the plate going 3 for 5, delivering the crushing blow in the sixth, a two run triple snaking down the right field line. The Hokie added another extra base hit and rbi in the seventh. The always clutch George Piccirilli had two hits, scored twice and added an rbi. Adam Young came on in the eighth and preserved Somer’s gem with two innings of scoreless, no hit pitching with the game ending on the finely tuned teamwork of Matt Murakami and John Ralston turning a crisp double play. “And that’s the way it is.”
On a social note; it has been reported that despite being sent a box of chocolates each week by a grateful Ole Miss alum for giving a heads up about the CGL’s top pitcher, Matt ‘MC Mad Dog’ Crouse, Coach Snyder is cutting a svelte figure in his Pirate garb. The Pirates meet the Nationals Tuesday at PVI at 7pm. Memories of the 10-1 thrashing should be dancing in their heads, bring your A game, fellas.
