Not until the 8th inning were the Carney Pirates (13-4) able to pull away from the determined Fairfax Nationals (6-10) with a 7-4 win in the June 30 contest. Up until then the game had been like a chess match, yet with quick Pirate base-running, and costly National errors, the Pirates were able to jump ahead. Mike Mitchell (St. John’s) pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up 8 hits, 4 run, and 4 strikeouts. Tyler McElhenny (Christopher Newport University) came in middle relief for the next 3 1/3 innings, keeping the Nationals scoreless and allowing only 1 hit, with 3 strikeouts. Closer, Mike Manfro (Greensboro College) closed the game in the 9th with a shut-out, facing only 3 National batters.
The hitting machine of the Carney Pirate bats produced again, this time 12 hits. Alex Guerra (Radford) went 3-6, with a HR (Pirate’s 7th), Dbl, 3 Runs, and 1 RBI. Jake Huxtable (Central Florida) went 3-5, Dbl, and 2 Runs. Michael McMenamin (Virginia Tech) went 2-4, 2 RBI’s, along with John Ralston (Rider) who had a Dbl. Singles were provided by Chad Morgan (Virginia Tech), 2 RBI’s, George Piccirilli (VMI) RBI, and Brett Bowers (ECU).
The Carney Pirates face the Vienna Senators tonight, July 1st at Walters Field in Vienna, Virginia. Game time is 7:00 pm.
