Pirates Back on the Win Side

The Carney Pirates (9-4) held off the Fairfax Nationals (4-8) with a 3-1 win. The Pirate pitchers held the Nationals to 6 hits. Pat Somers (ECU) pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up 3 hits, 1 run, and 4 strikeouts. In middle relief, Adam Young (Lafayette) stepped in for 1 1/3 inning, giving up nothing , then Drew Shaw (Temple) stepped in for 2/3 inning, allowing 1 hits, followed by Reed Bromley (Tennessee Wesleyan) for 1/3 inning. Closer, Mike Manfro (Greensboro College) came in the 9th inning holding the Nationals to 2 additional hits.
Again the Carney Pirate bats produced double digit hits – 12. Mike Snyder (Ole’ Miss) went 3-4, with a RBI, 1 Run, John Ralston (Rider) went 2-4, RBI, Michael McMenamin (Virginia Tech) went 2-3, Dbl, and singles by Matthew Murakami (Maryland), Zach Costello (Radford), Rob Lamas (Radford), Chad Morgan (Virginia Tech), and Brett Bowers (ECU).
The defensive play of the game was made by Pirate Center Fielder Zach Costello (Radford) in the bottom of the 9th. With Cardinals on 3rd and 2nd with 1 out, Costello makes a spectacular diving catch in Center Field, stopping the Cardinals from advancing the bases and tying the game.
The Pirates play Saturday at Nellis Stadium at 11:00 am against the MCBL – MD Black Barons.
