The Carney Pirates (7-1) rallied past the Vienna Senator (6-2) with a 7-2 win. Carney Pirate pitchers held the Senators to 5 hits. Connor Mielock (Oakland) pitched 7 shut out innings, allowing only 1 hit (which happened in the 7th inning). Drew Shaw (Temple) stepped in as middle relief for the next inning, allowing 3 hits, 2 runs. Adam Young (Lafayette) closed the game, allowing only 1 hit.
Though the Vienna Senator pitchers were able to strike out 13, the Carney Pirates bats were hot with 12 hits. The Pirates jumped out early with 5 hits and 4 runs in the 1st inning. Alex Guerra (Radford) went 3-5, Dble, 1 RBI, Matthew Murakami (Maryland) went 3-5, Dble, 2 RBI’s, George Piccirilli (VMI) went 2-4, 2 RBI’s and singles by Michael McMenamin (Virginia Tech), with a RBI, Zach Costello (Radford), and a double by Tim McCormick (St John’s).
As expected there were some great defensive plays by both teams. In the 1st inning, Pirate George Piccirilli (VMI) made a sliding catch in Left Field, and in the 6th inning, Pirate Alex Guerra (Radford) laid out snagging a line drive down 3rd, both off Vienna Senator Ty Wiesemeyer (Illinois State Unv.). Ironically, Senator Ty Wiesemeyer reciprocated in the 5th inning, making a spectacular catch over his shoulder in Center Field off batter Alex Guerra.
The Carney Pirates will face the Southern MD Cardinals on Wednesday, June 17th at Nellis Stadium at Panther Field. Game time is 7:00 pm.
