Pirates take two wins in June 13 Double Header

The Carney Pirates (5-1) had a double header against the MCBL-Gaithersburg Giants and came away with two wins. Mike Mitchell (St. John’s) made his first appearance for the Carney Pirates, pitching 5 shut out innings, allowing only 2 hits, and striking out 3. Chris Yates (William and Mary) completed the game, continuing the shut out allowing 3 hits, and striking out 5. In the 4th inning the Carney Pirates made a great defensive play, Second Baseman Matthew Murakami (Maryland) was able to stop a potential single up the middle, gloved tossed the ball to Shortstop Jake Huxtable (Central Florida) for the out at second. Huxtable then turned and threw home to Catcher Michael McMenamin (Virginia Tech), who was able to block the plate and tag out the Gaithersburg Giant runner.
The Carney Pirates had 7 timely hits. George Piccirilli (VMI) went 2-3, with a RBI, Jake Huxtable (Central Florida) went 1-3 with 2 RBI’s , Michael McMenamin (Virginia Tech) went 1-2, with a RBI and singles by Alex Gurerra (Radford), Matthew Murakami (Maryland), and Brett Bowers (ECU).
For the 2nd game of the DH, the Carney Pirates pitched another shut out. Pitcher Pat Somers (ECU) pitched 5 shut out innings, allowing 4 hits, striking out 3. Torey Mancari (Mary Washington) completed the game, continuing the shut out allowing 1 hit.
This game the Carney Pirates had 9 hits. Zach Costello (Radford) went 2-3, 1 RBI, 3 Runs, and 2 stolen bases within same inning. George Piccirilli (VMI) went 3-4, 3 RBI’s, Tim McCormick (St. John’s) Triple, Singles by Matthew Murakami (Maryland) and RBI, Reed Bromley (Tennessee Wesleyan) and RBI, and Rob Lamas (Radford).
The Carney Pirates won the first game 5-0 and the second game 7-0.
The Carney Pirates will play the Fairfax Nationals as Nellis Stadium Field on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
